Idaho Spring always brings things to watch for. It's not just the warmer weather and beautiful flowers but some hazards to keep an eye out for.
1. Cheatgrass (Foxtails)
Cheatgrass is notorious in the Boise foothills and all throughout the Treasure Valley. Its barbed seeds burrow into paws, ears, eyes, and skin, causing infections and sometimes requiring surgery. So, it’s a good idea to check your dog after every walk and remove the cheatgrass from their fur.
Watch for:
- Excessive paw licking
- Head shaking
- Sudden limping
- Red, swollen spots
2. Ticks & Fleas Surge Early
With the weird warm winter we had, it’s possible the ticks will be “out in full force”, especially near rivers, foothills, and tall grass. Check with your vet about preventative options or even holistic options for tick and flea prevention.
3. Parasites: Mosquitoes, Heartworm, & Intestinal Worms
Warm weather brings mosquitoes (heartworm carriers) and intestinal parasites.
Action:
- Ask your vet about heartworm prevention
- Avoid stagnant water
- Keep yard waste cleaned up
4. Stagnant Water & Leptospirosis
Idaho puddles, ditches, and ponds can harbor bacteria like leptospirosis. So, it’s always best to Bring your own water on walks, try to prevent puddle drinking and ssk your vet about the lepto vaccine if your dog hikes or swims often
